Dog Parks: The New Walk Around the Block?

by Julia · September 23rd, 2008 · 1 Comment

Living in DC and owning a dog has many logistical challenges. I think one of the biggest being where do I take my dog to play? Many of us aren’t lucky enough to have a yard for our dogs and according to the American Humane Society, even yard- bound dogs won’t run around the yard enough to get the exercise they need.

So what is the answer to owning a dog in a metropolitan area? Well, for many canine lovers the answer lies within their neighborhood at the local dog park. According to Wikipedia, a dog park is a facility set aside for dogs and their owners to exercise and play off-leash in a controlled environment. The dog park provides a perfect time for you to bond with your dog and for your dog to socialize with their canine friends. If you are living in the DC Metropolitan area the Washington Post has a great tool on their website to help you find your local dog park. If you’re not in the DC areas check out Dog-Park-USA for your dog’s local gathering spot along with ratings and comments about the parks.

Advocates finally got DC to change its restrictions on dog parks so we can finally have official, fenced in places for our pups to run without risking a ticket from the police! I’m so excited for the first one to open and for the map on WPost.com to be updated :)
