The Smithsonian museums have always been a favorite DC spot of mine. No matter how many times I’ve visited I always discover something new and of course I have my favorite exhibits that I visit time and time again. So my excitement for the opening of the newest addition to the Smithonian is no surprise to those that know me well. On September 27, The National Museum of Natural History will welcome the Sant Ocean Hall - a 23,000 square-foot exhibit that allows its visitors to explore the deep depths of the ocean.
Sant Ocean Hall, which is the largest permanent exhibition ever produced by the National Museum of Natural History, features 674 specimens and models that will give guests an up close view of the world under the water while providing a historical guide of the changes through the years and a look at what the future holds. The learning experience will also be enhanced with the interactive features included in the exhibit - Guests will be entertained with videos, touch-screen computers, maps and animated images which are just a few of the aspects worked into the exhibition.
Some must see stops during your visit - “Phoenix,” the 45-foot-long North Atlantic right whale hanging from above; the Coral Reef, a 1,500-gallon aquarium; a 7-foot fossil of a Great White Shark Jaw; the 24-foot-long giant squid suspended in a fluid-filled tank; and a Coelacanth, the prehistoric fish that was thought to have gone extinct 65 million years ago.
On your next DC visit definitely make some time to visit Sant Ocean Hall. And for those that can’t wait, Saturday’s grand opening is packed with speakers, book signings, dance and music. For more details and a schedule of events visit the National National Museum of Natural History website and take a look at DCist for some great pictures of the Hall.
