I am thrilled to share with you all this week a great novel written for pet lovers everywhere! The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski is a moving book that is nothing short of incredible. The story centers around a mute named Edgar Sawtelle who lives on a farm with his family, raising and training a fictional breed of dog. After the sudden death of his father, Edgar flees the farm and begins his struggle for survival (along with three yearling dogs who accompany him on his journey.) That is, until he decides to confront his father’s killer…
I don’t want to give one minute of this book away. It would be cheating every reader who decides to partake in this adventure with Edgar. However, I will say that I was captivated by this book from the moment I first opened the novel (and not just because Oprah’s Book Club sticker shined so brightly on the cover.) The characters could be your own family members. There is an intimacy which develops between the reader and these characters that only grows stronger the more you read. And this doesn’t stop at humans…I’m also talking about the four-legged friends we all know and love.
For anyone who has ever been convinced that their dog (or any pet) understands you without having to say a word, this book is for you. This novel takes the pet/owner relationship to a whole new level. It made me truly believe that sometimes our pets know us just as well, and maybe better, than anyone else in this world. However, this book is not just about dogs, but since I could never say it as well as Stephen King, I will simply quote a line of his review: “It’s a novel about the human heart, and the mysteries that live there, understood but impossible to articulate.”
Additionally, if you have read the book and have questions left unanswered about the novel or if you are just curious to hear more about how Edgar Sawtelle came to life, you may want to consider attending Oprah’s webcast with author David Wroblewski on January 26th at 9pm (EST).
You may reserve a “seat” here: http://www.oprah.com/static/webcast/obc/webcast_register_obc.html
And even submit questions for the author here: https://www.oprah.com/plugform.jsp?plugId=977210
Just for full disclosure, I am working with Oprah’s Book Club to get the word out about this webcast, but I would like to emphasize that I am a huge fan of this novel and still proclaim it a “must read” for all pet and book lovers out there!
